Review - South Wales Evening Post - Wed 14, March
It is exactly 38 years since this lively musical, written specifically as a vehicle for Tommy Steele, was first performed on the London Stage.
Despite its period setting, this is a timeless show which still works brilliantly - and the Cockett Amateur Operatic Society has pulled out all the stops to ensure that this production, Directed by David Thomas, is very special indeed.
Cenydd Phillips is an ideal choice for the central role of Arthur Kipps, while Cerian Forrest's debut performance as Ann is particularly impressive. Comedy relief is provided by Gwyn Lewis as Chitterlow, while other noteworthy contributions come from Brian Sullivan as Shalford and from Margaret James, Clare Stevens and Martyn Morgan as the Walsinfham family.
It is also heartening to see so many fine performers emerging from the ranks of the chorus. Julie George's choreography breathes life into the big production numbers, while the musical direction is handled by Lynne Powell.
The show's run ends on Saturday.
