Egham Town 1 - Whyteleafe 3

Steve Boswell gets
 involved

A hot day to watch to watch football let alone play it. Also being an FA Cup tie the tempo was going to be high whatever the weather. A midday kick-off (to accommodate fans of international football) also meant the sun was going to be right overhead.

Whyteleafe deserved their victory although Egham looked a strong side more than capable of hauling themselves out of the deep recesses of Rymans Division 3. Having now seen Egham's play, it is less of a surprise that that they defeated Croydon in the previous round.

'Leafe opened the scoring after around 16 minutes with Paul McKay finding himself in space down the left hand side and, spotting Egham keeper (Trent Phillips) off his line, swung in a superb shot from 30 yards. The ball climbed over the hapless Phillips and dropped into the back of the net. A spectacular goal worthy of any round of the FA Cup.

The second came only five minutes later when Gary Elliot long throw from the right was poorly defended. Danny Arkwright's knocked the ball on and it ended up with Paul Scott who had time to let the ball drop, bounce in front of him before smacking the ball into the middle of the net, two-nil.

After 30 minutes, the 'Leafe defence had their usual jitters with Egham's best player, Des Boateng, given the opportunity to lob Danny Rose, an opportunity too good for him to miss. the biggest mouth in Egham, Jamie Sheffield

More open football ensued in the second half but eventually Whyteleafe managed to put the game beyond Egham's reach when Dean Howland powered in a superb header from a deep corner. After this, Egham never really looked interested and spent most of the time arguing with the officials. This finally resulted in substitute, Jamie Sheffield, being sent off for a second bookable offence. His first caution was for stupidly arguing and his second for a late tackle on Steve Boswell (and he argued the toss over that one too!).

The match saw the welcome return of Nigel Golley to the side after a spell of early season injury. Paul McKay had a superb game and more than deserved his fine goal.
