Gippsland Falcons play in the Australian National Soccer League (NSL) and have just completed their 8th successive season (1999/2000). The Falcons are the only truly regional club in the NSL and have confounded all their critics by surviving in the NSL for so long, while numerous big city clubs have fallen by the wayside.
The Falcons are based in Morwell in the Gippsland region of Victoria, some 150 kilometres from Melbourne. Morwell is the centre of the Latrobe Valley, where virtually all of the state's electricity is produced, and the town is surrounded by power stations and open cut brown coal mines.
The region has endured the privatisation of the power industry over the last 10 years, a period during which it's population has shrunk to a fraction of what it once was. Gippsland currently boasts the highest unemployment rate in the State, and one of the highest in Australia.
