GETAFE

FOOTBALL CLUB

Getafe C.F. is a modest club in the Spanish Second a Division which saved the category in the last match in the 1999/2000 season after finishing in the 19th position in a League of 22 teams. Only the relegation of Atletico Madrid that caused the going down of its filial team could avoid the disaster of the going back to the Second B Division.

The Club

It was founded in 1983 to replace to the ancient Getafe Club Deportivo which had been in the Second Division in Spanish football between the 1977/78 and the 1981/82 seasons. After several consecutive promotions, it got to go back to the 2nd B in the a 1987/88 season and the first promotion to the 2nd A wouldn't be till the 1993/94 season after beating in the play-offs to Figueres, Alaves and Recreativo of Huelva. In spite of its sport relegation on the next year, it continued in the category for the affaire 'Sevilla-Celta'. It didn't either boot that second chance and it was relegated again to the 2nd B in the 1995/96 where it had a very dissapointment way, even playing the relegation play-offs to the Third Division versus Huesca in the 1996/97 season. In the 1998/99 with a new stadium, its Coliseum Alfonso Pérez (with capacity for 16,400 spectators), it got to set one's heart on, to the supporters going back to the Second A Division after finishing as champion in the Group I in the regular phase and beating to Barakaldo, Sevilla 'B' and Real Murcia in the play-offs.
