Die Baumeister von Arkadia

The theme here is that players are architects (Baumeister) working for influential families all trying to build a new castle and its surrounding buildings in the city of Arkadia. The game involves tile laying and resource management - so of course this was on my must have list in 2006!

The square castle pieces are very similar to thise found in Torres with the addition here of a card insert that goes in the top of each piece to show which family it belongs to.As well as these there are also buildings in 7 different shapes, a deck of cards and each player has their own screen and worker pieces.

On a player's turn you can either lay a building or place workers.
Yo place a building, you choose a card from your hand, take that shape building and place it on the board next to the castle, another building or a worker.

To place a worker, you choose one or more workers from behind your screen and position them around a building on the board.

When all spaces around a building are occupied by workers or other buildings, that building is completed. The player who completed the building takes the coloured seal from that building, and all players who have a worker adjacent to the building also take a seal as well.

Completing a building also lets you place a piece of the castle. This is important as castle pieces contribute to your score as the number of castle pieces of that color that are visable from above is the value of each seal collected behind your screen, and you determine when to score, up to 4 times in a game, by declaring a scoring after any of your turns. This earns you gold and more workers of your colour. The winner is the player with most gold when the castle is completed.

I really enjoyed this game as it has tile laying and resource management, mechanics I like in my games. The game is easy to learn, but takes a few plays to fully understand the strategies that can be used. When to score, for example. It's up to you when to score and it's timing can be quite tactful.
