Caylus

Caylus is set in France, but could equally be portraying the building of a castle in England.
The King needs master-builders (the players) to build him a castle outside a small village. As the foundations and dungeons of the castle are built this attracts more tradesman to the area and gradually the village grows into a city as the castle begins to take shape.

These events have really been well realised in this game. Each turn is divided into phases. First income, then you send out the workers to build wooden buildings, then as the game progresses, stone buildings and residential buildings which then become prestige buildings. Once the workers have been sent out, the buildings are then activated in turn to bring in resources such as wood, cloth and food, which are then used to erect more buildings and build up the castle.

While all this is happening, prestige is being earned. There are scoring rounds when the dungeons are built and again when the walls are built and it is the player with the most prestige at the end of the game, when the castle towers are built, that will win.

Just on its first playing with two players it played really well and we thoroughly enjoyed it. All sorts of subtle things could be seen to be going on. With more players I can see this being even more fun. The prestige gained was swinging back and forth throughout, ending up with a close finish.

SUMMARY:
This is a really good resource management game and if you enjoy this kind of game then this is well worth adding to your collection.
