The game is played over 7-12 rounds depending on the number of players.
Each player’s turn begins with a roll of the two 8-sided dice. These dice determine on an 8x8 grid which space the player must begin the trade tower which is a set of 5 brown discs. From here, the player will move four more spaces which is where the negotiation comes in as pthe other players negotiate to which spaces they would like the tower to be moved to. In this way, players collect goods, manage their resoirces and negotiate with each other as well - there is very little down time in this game!
On each players turn there are only 5 tower spaces, and so only 5 actions, which can be negotiated with the other players. As each player is only allowed to take one action during each player’s turn, it can get quite intense. The object of all this bartering is so that each player can fulfill large and small orders, deliver messages and gain privileges to earn money (Ducats) to win the game.
Traders of Genoa is a game that is simple to play, but offers a depth in decision making and good player interaction that few games achieve. This makes Traders of Genoa a very good game to have in your collection.
