The Gran Turismo 3: A-spec Apocalypse Zone

Complex String

Complex String and Reverse
Okay then. The longest track anyone has ever seen ever. Ever ever. And possibly the oddest. With a 12 corner chicane, 90 left-right combinations, counter-rotating spiral corners and undulating chicanes, this track has it all (except shortness). Probably the sternest test in the game of car and driver. Just thank Christ you don't have to race on it...

Complex String I:

  1. We start off with a very, very long straight You'll find most cars in the game with normal set-up will be bouncing off the rev limiter in top gear. What follows is a nasty 180º right. Keep on the left of the track and brake between the 200m and 100m boards. Then prepare for the REAL hell to start...
  2. Now comes a big bunch of right/left chicanes all in a string. There is nothing I can say to help you here, apart from try to keep a smooth accelerate/turn action going. Try to hit the kerbs, but don't overtry or you'll never get the car back. Watch one of the IA licence replays with the Ruf RGT to see what you should do.
  3. Brake down into 3rd for the next easy-ish left (Split 1 is here) and prepare for low-gear torment. Here is a biiiig bunch of square corners - 90º the lot of them, going left-right-right-left-left-right-right etc. so that every 2 corners acts like a hairpin. Try to bounce off the kerbs as much as possible and beware of the first right in the second set of right-rights, which is a little tighter than the others on the exit. You should almost never get above 2nd gear here.
  4. Right, now that's over head down the short straight bit, glide through a 4th gear left (hopefully without braking) and nail the brakes on at the exit for the next 2nd gear left. You're looking to get the back of the car to drift right a little, but not too much.
  5. Another short straight leads into a sharp-ish right and another short straight (Split 2 is here). Next comes pure evil.
  6. It's the spiral corners section - oh bugger! 270º for the lot of them. Slap the brakes silly and crest the apex for the first 1st gear right, then it's a 2nd gear left that's effectively a hairpin. Give it a short burst in 2nd before the next 2nd/3rd gear right. Keep a constant accelerator level and try to snog the kerbs when they come. The next two - a left then a right are best done in 3rd/4th gear. Then a short burst in followed by a 4th gear left and another short blast when you see the tyre wall ahead finish. The final corner is a bastard - 3rd/4th gear for most of it before it suddenly shallows and you can put the hammer down. Run over split 3 in 5th-ish gear.
  7. Uh-oh... Hillock'o'clock. Timing is everything here, but you should be running through in 5th or 6th gear all the way. The trick is to brake and turn before you crest the hill - when the car is still climbing and heavy, rather than cresting the hill and going light. It's a left/right/left/right/left affair and hitting the kerbs on each is the only way to go. It's always blind turning, but a few runs should see you getting confidence.
  8. Exit the final flatter right more-or-less straight across and brake into 3rd for a double apex left. More gas and prepare for a 3rd gear right which flattens mid-corner. Plenty more gas now...
  9. Almost there, but wait! Coming up fast is a horrific 90º right/90º left chicane and you'll need to absolutely slaughter those brake discs. The timing is odd here, but the braking point comes to you with time. Gas away!
  10. One final, sharpening 3rd gear right awaits you - don't hop on the power too early or you can say "fare thee welle" to your car as it understeers off. But when you've got that power on, don't let it off.
  11. Across the line! Now all you need to do is get the Ruf a little faster for Time Attack 10...

Key Corner - I'm sure there IS such a thing, but I can't really pick out one key corner that is both unique and capable of winning/losing you loads of time. The undulating chicanes near the end are worth a few seconds though, for the braver driver...

Complex String II:

Don't make me describe this one as well!

Key Corner - See Compex String I. Well bloody go on then!
